Volunteer Millers of de Immigrant Windmill will spotlight a sister grist mill located in Muscatine, Iowa. The original grain grinding water mill was established in 1848. Today, located in Wildcat Den State Park, it has undergone restoration and stands as one of the few remaining grist mills of this Midwestern region. Tom Hanifan , originally from Clinton, Iowa, will share the history and present significance of this mill to this developing agricultural area. Learn about how the establishment and continuation of use of this old grist mill played a role in Iowa history. Compare and contrast the use of wind and water power milling of grain into edible flours.
Speaker, Tom Hanifan, as a volunteer with the Leadership Muscatine organization, will share how a volunteer group led to the restoration and interpretation of the old water mill. Tom has been President of the Friends of the Mill group since 1998.
All sponsored programming events are held at the Windmill Cultural Center at 111- 10th Avenue in downtown Fulton, across from the authentic Dutch windmill. This event is hosted through a grant from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation to support the arts and sciences in the local area. The presentation will begin at 6:00pm on Thursday, August 15.
