An area of Main Avenue was evacuated for several hours last evening due to a chemical leak in a building on Main Avenue.

At about 4:30 Clinton Fire crews were called to 85 Main Avenue about a spill in the basement of a what was described as a very strong smelling substance.

Emergency crews found a 55 gallon drum leaking a toxic and flammable substance into the basement.

A block in each direction was evacuated..

Alliant Energy was called to turn off the electric and gas service to the building.

The Davenport Hazmat team was called to the scene.  That crew removed the hazard and placed it in containers for removal.
After about 4 1/2 hours the area was determined to be safe for residents to return home.  Crews remained on the scene for another 1 1/2 hours for clean up.  No injuries were reported.

Also providing assistance were the Clinton Police Department and Street Crews plus the Water Treatment was contacted.
