Big increase in fireworks complaints show public education may not have worked

Clinton Police Chief Kevin Gyrion has compiled a comparison of fireworks complaints from 2016, before fireworks sales were legal, to this year when sales of fireworks became legal.

The Police Chief reported from June 20th thru July 17th in 2016 there were were 74 calls complaining about fireworks while this year when the sale of fireworks was legal there were 335 calls concerning fireworks during that same period.

The latest figures were distributed to the council members and the media.

While the new state law mandated sales of consumer fireworks be allowed the local governments were allowed to make rules on the use.  The Clinton City Council maintained the ordinance that banned the use of fireworks.

In an email response to KROS NEWS – the Clinton Police Chief stated that he believed many people thought the Clinton city ordinance had changed due to the legal sales.  Adding – It appears that despite our best efforts at public awareness, people thought the local ordinance allowed the use of fireworks

Earlier the police chief told KROS NEWS there eight citation and about 30 warnings issued thru the 4th of July.
