Heat Advisory Issued for the area

…Extended Period of Dangerous Heat and Humidity… .

A hot and humid air mass will remain over much of the area through Saturday. The heat combined with the humidity will push peak heat index values over 100 degrees. At night, heat indices will remain at or above 75 providing little relief. The cumulative effects of consecutive days with heat indices over100 will increase the risk for heat related illnesses for thoses pending time outside or without access to air conditioning.

Counties in the Advisory Area: Benton-Linn-Jones-Clinton-Whiteside-

Including the cities of Vinton, Cedar Rapids, Anamosa, Clinton, and Sterling

..HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CDT FRIDAY… * Heat Index Values…up to 105 due to temperatures in the lower  90s…and dew points in the mid 70s.

* Timing…Today through Friday evening. There is the potential  that the advisory may need to be extended through Saturday.

* Impacts…Increased risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke  for people spending time outside or living without air  conditioning. Children and the elderly are most susceptible.  Also, parked vehicles will become dangerously hot within  minutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures and high humidity is expected.  This combination will lead to possible heat illnesses.  Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun…and check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.  Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.  Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.  Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.
