Drier than normal and the 10th coolest August

August was cooler and drier than normal with some unique weather statistics included.

Clinton area official weather observer Jim Blaess says August was the 10th coolest August in records to 1979.

The overall average temperature of about 68 (68.1) degrees and  was over four (4.5) degrees below normal.

He says the highest temperature during the month on August 2nd with 85 degrees.  Blaess says that is the lowest high temperature in an August in Clinton weather records to 1891.  He added that there were 5 days of the 31 in the month with at or above normal high temperatures.

Bleass said the overall average high temperature for the month was about 77 (77.1) degrees which is more below the overall August average high of about 82 (82.4)

The lowest temperature during the month was 50 degrees on August 23rd.

With no days with highs at or above 90 degrees, Blaess says that is the first August since 1891 without a 90 degree day.  There were no 90 degree or above temperatures in July and that makes only the second time there was a July and August with no 90 degree readings.  The other time was 2009.

Blaess says there was just more than 2 (2.26) inches precipitation in August. That is about 2 inches below the normal (4.41).

But, the Year-To-Date precipitation is just above 31inches (31.57)which is still more than six inches above the normal (24.93) for the first 8 months of the year.

During the meteorological summer – of June, July and August – Blaess says the overall temperature was just less than 72 (71.7) degrees.  That is about a degree below the overall average (72.9) for the period.

There were six days in June with 90 or above temperatures and none in July or August and that is 14 days below the average for the meteorological summer.

In September, Blaess says the average high on the 1st ins 81 and the low is 60.  He says those drop to 71 and 48 by the end of the month.  Blaess says you can expect one day with 90 or above temperature.  The Clinton area weather observer says the average precipitation is about three inches.
