Child left alone at home

A Clinton woman is charged with ‘Child Endangerment’ in a case Clinton Police discovered a couple of weeks ago.

The case was noted in the weekly staff reports from city departments and occurred October 21st

Police reported they were called to an apartment at about 1 AM on October 21st to check on the welfare of baby.  A neighbor reported the baby had been crying for 40 minutes or more.  The person lived below the apartment in question.

Officers were not able to enter the apartment.  The resident did not answer the door.  The landlord was called and entry was gained to the apartment and there was no sign of a guardian.

Officers found a 17 month old child – as they described – ‘sleeping on a pile of Oreo cookies.’

The officers left information for the guardian and took the child into custody for safe keeping and contacted DHS.

According to court papers – Michaela Mitchell -29 years old – came to the police department at 2:45AM and admitted being the mother of the child.  She told officers she was looking for her grandmother’s cat.

She was charged with child endangerment.
