March was colder than normal with more snow than normal

March ended about three degrees below normal for the overall temperature.

Clinton Area Weather Observer Jim Blaess says the overall temperature was 36 degrees.  He says that’s about three degrees below the historical average (36.2).

Blaess says the lowest temperature was 13 on March 8th.

The weather observer says the highest temperature was 55 on March 18th and 31st.

Blaess pointed out that tied 1984 as the second coldest high for a March and coldest since a 53 degree reading in 1965 and 1906.  Those records date back to the 1891.

Blaess says the precipitation for March was 2.29 inches and virtually matches the normal of 2.24.

The month included 9.7 inches of snow and compares to the normal of 3.1.  Blaess says that’s the most since March 1999 when there was 13.3 inches of snow.

The 8.2 inches of snow on the 24th was the largest 24 hour snowfall in March to 1893.

In April, Blaess says you can expect 3.05 inches of precipitation with a half-an-inch of snow.

Blaess says the average high on April 1st is 57 and average low is 35 and those rise to averages of 69 and 46 by the end of the month.

The weather observer said April has started off with near record cold.  The low Monday morning was 15 and that compares to the record of the date of 14 set first in 1889.  The low Sunday was 19 and that compares to the record low of 17 for the date.
