Cold but dry

April 2018 will be in the Clinton weather records as the coldest April back to 1879.

Local weather observer Jim Blaess says the overall temperature was 42.3 degrees which is about one degree below the previous coldest April of 1881 (43.4 degrees).

The normal is 51.9 degrees.

In another indication of the cold weather, Blaess pointed out that five days of the first eight days of the month had lows in the teens and normal number of days with temperature in the teens is 4.

One of those days-April 8th with a low of 15 set a new record.  The old record had been 18 set in 1972.  Blaess added that on the 7th it was 14 and although it was not a record for the date it was the 4th lowest temperature in an April to 1888.

The National Weather Service Observer said that 24 of the 30 days in April had below normal temperatures.

Blaess recorded 0.63-hundreths of an inch of precipitation and that was the third lowest in an April to 1878.

The normal precipitation is 3.05 inches

There was 3.5 inches of snow in the month.  The normal is a half an inch of snow.

For the snow season of October through April, Blaess reported 34.4 inches of snow while the normal is 31 inches.

For this month the weather observer says the average high on May 1st is 69 and the low is 46 and those rise to averages of 78 and 56.

There is also nearly four inches of precipitation.
