Could there be record cold weather this week

A couple of low temperature records were set over the weekend and the month’s snowfall total is now in the top ten for the month of January.

Clinton area weather observer Jim Blaess says the low on Saturday was 21 below zero and that was record for the date.  He says the old record was minus 18 set in 1897 and tied in 1930.

On Sunday the low was minus 16 and that tied the record for January 27th set in 1895 and tied in 1976.

The snowfall overnight into Monday morning total 3.5 inches.  Blaess says that brings the month’s snowfall to 19.5 inches.  That, he says, compares to the normal snow for the entire month of 9.4 inches.

Blaess says the 2018 total is the most snow in a January since 1999 when there was 19.7 inches.  Blaess says the total is the 7th most snowfall in a January since 1888.  The highest total is 32.8 inches in January 1979.

With extremely cold weather predicted this week-Blaess says the coldest high temperature in Clinton is 15 below zero set on February 2nd of 1996 and the coldest reading recorded was the next day at 29 degrees below zero.
