Before And After School Day Care Recomended

A before and after school child care program is being recommended for the Clinton Schools by a group of students who have been studying he issue of child care in the community.  It’s part of the Iowa Big program where students work on real world problems.

The students studying the child care issue presented their recommendations to the school board at a recent meeting.  Students in the picture are (l-R) Courtney Bengtson, Alaina Piatz, Cassidy Balk

The students said their survey showed a child care crisis in the community and surveys show there is a demand for the services.  The students say the child care crisis is not just a Clinton issue but an issue impacting many locations.

They said it could help improve the economy and employment with parents having a place for the children.

After studying the issue and visiting other communities with school based child care programs  Alaina Piatz said they were recommending the district implement the before and after school care in collaboration with the Y-W-C-A

Director of the Y-W-C-A Shannon Sander-Welzin said the program can benefit everyone..

The students said an all day child care program in the schools is a program that could be studied further and considered.

A tentative contract has been prepared with the school district and Y-W to provide the program at each of the four elementary schools. It will be considered at the school board meeting May 13th.
