May was colder overall than normal.

Clinton Area Weather Observer Jim Blaess reported the overall average temperature was 59 degrees for the month.  He says that’s below the historical average of 62.5.

The weather observer said highest reading was 88 on May 16th and the coldest was 37 on the 4th and 13th.

Blaess says there ten days with normal or above normal temperatures

For the meteorological spring of March-April and May the overall temperature was 47.8 degrees which is below the normal of 51.2 for the period according to the weather observer.

Blaess says during the period there was 1.5 inches of snow which is below the normal of 3.5 inches.

Blaess says historically there are not days with zero or below days in the spring period but this year it did drop to 6 below zero on March 4th.

In June, Blaess says there are four days with 90 or above.  He adds there were six days with 90 or above last year.

May 2019 will be the second wettest May in the 140 years of local weather records.

Local weather observer Jim Blaess says there has been 9.66 of an inch of rain in May.  He says about eight inches of the total came in the last half of the month with 4.47 inches between Monday and Wednesday this week.

May of 1996 with 12.35 inches of rain will remain the wettest May in the Clinton weather records.

The normal precipitation of the month is 3.94 inches.

The meteorological spring of March-April and May, Blaess says will also be second wettest period in the records.  He says during the three-month period there has been 17.52 of an inch.

The meteorological spring with the most precipitation is 1973 with 20.37 of an inch.

For first five months of the year, Blaess says the total is 22.58 of an inch of precipitation.  Blaess says that 10.21 of a inch above the normal of 12.31.

Blaess also mentioned that June is typically the wettest month of the year with an average of 4.6 inches of rain.  But he pointed out the past five years the precipitation has been above normal in June including last year with 6.95 of an inch.
