Clinton County residents interested in running for their City Council or School Board can  begin filing papers to place their name on the November 5 ballot. (Read the official statement from Eric Van Lancker, Clinton County Auditor and Commissioner of Election-link also included to elections webpage for other details)

This is the first year in Iowa that the City and School elections have been combined to be conducted on the same day.

Candidates will need to file a nomination petition and an affidavit of candidacy to get their name on the ballot. Those documents need to be filed with the city clerk for a seat with the city or with the school secretary for a seat on the school board.

Candidates can begin filing those papers with those officials on August 26. The petitions are due to those officials before 5 p.m. on September 19.

“Potential candidates should contact their city clerk, school secretary or the Clinton County Auditor’s Office to find out how many signatures they will need on their nomination petition,” suggested Eric Van Lancker, Clinton County Auditor and Commissioner of Election.

Also new this year is a requirement on nomination papers that the papers include information about the person who is distributing the nomination papers. That information should include the person’s name, signature, address and phone number.

Van Lancker reminds candidates that they may run for both a city council and school board seat on the same ballot.
