Riverfront Park Area Could Become Apartment/Retail Development (map included) & more from the council meeting

A section of Clinton Riverfront Park could be developed into an apartment and business area.

The Clinton City Council set a public hearing for the meeting on September 10th for a development agreement with a firm known as MERGE LLC.

City Administrator Matt Brooke says the six month agreement will allow for a study on the plan for the use of 4 and a half acres of property at the corner of Riverview Drive and 6th Avenue North (see map below).

Brooke added the developer also needs workforce housing tax credits to finance the project.

The firm will pay the city one-thousand dollars for the first six months of a right of first refusal.  If an extension is granted they will pay an additional five-thousand dollar fee.

Brooke said the firm will attend the public hearing to answer any questions.

A separate deal will put a property the city has taken ownership will be sold to a tech firm.

The firm – known as RIPEVA LLC – from Dubuque will pay the city five-thousand dollars for the property and 400 square foot structure on 1108 South 8th Street at the city with the promise to make 8-thousand dollars in repairs and use the structure.

City Administrator Matt Brooke says this is the first time the city has used a combined sale agreement and development agreement.

There will be a public hearing at the September 10th council meeting on the deal.

With no comments the Council also approve the City Administrator’s recommendation to name Battalion Commander Joel Atkinson as the new Fire Chief.  He would replace Mike Brown who will be retiring in late November.

Action to name Battalion Chief Jeff Chapman as Assistant Fire Chief had been removed from the agenda earlier for further review by the Civil Service Commission.
