4th Year In Row No 90’s in August Is A Deviation From The Expected

August was cooler than usual with more rain the normal.

Clinton Area Weather Observer Jim Blaess says the overall high temperature came out at 70.2 degrees.  He says that’s 2.4 degrees below the normal of 72.6.  Blaess says it will be the 28th coolest August in records to 1879.

The highest temperature was 87 on the 5th and the lowest was 54 on the 9th – the 28th and 29th.

Blaess reported the precipitation for the month at 4.55 inches which is about the normal of 4.41 inches.

Blaess says the year-to-date precipitation is 35.43 inches.  Blaess says that’s 9.51 inches above the normal for the first eight months of 34.25.  The Weather Observer added the total for the first eight months is not abover the normal total for the entire year of 34.25 inches.

For September Blaess says the precipitation averages 2.95 inches.  He says the average high on September 1st is 81 and the low is 60 and those averages drop to 71 and 48 by the end of the month.

Blaess pointed out that August 2019 was the fourth year in a row with no days with highs of 90 or above.  He says since the records started in 1893 there have been 13 times August had no days with temperatures in the 90’s.  He says since four of those of those were in the last four years it is being researched as something out of the ordinary.  He says the National Weather Services is now looking at the data for 2016, 2107, 2018 and 2018 as potentially being impacted by climate change.  Blaess  also noted that in 2104 and 2015 there was one day in each year with highs in the 90’s in August.
