Statewide Unemployment rate holds steady while local rates rise

Iowa’s unemployment rate was unchanged in January.

The rate held at two-point-eight percent — the same rate in December.  December had seen a slight increase in the rate when compared to November. The number of unemployed increased by 200 in January to 49-thousand-500.  The total number of working Iowans increased by 600 in January to more than one-point-seven million.  The unemployment rate was two-point-seven percent one year ago in January. The U-S unemployment rate increased slightly to three-point-six percent in January.

Locally the unemployment rates increased from December to January.   The Clinton County rate was 4.1 percent in December and rose to 4.9 percent in January.  In January of 2019 the rate was 4.4 percent.

In Clinton the unemployment rate rose from 4.2 in December to 4.7 in January.  link: Monthly Labor Force Data
