A partnership led by Iowa American Water Company and Clinton County Law Enforcement Agencies is bringing a new way for residents to dispose of prescription drugs that are expired or not needed.
The water company has paid to have four drop boxes located in the county for disposal of prescription drugs.
The boxes are located at the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Clinton Police Department plus the Camanche and DeWitt police departments. The boxes replace the once a year clean out your medicine cabinet effort.
The Gateway Impact Coalition has led the disposal effort and Kristin Huisenga says this is an example of collaboration between the agencies. She said “law enforcement in Clinton County has been committed to getting rid of prescription drugs and getting them out of the household for abuse. Iowa American Water stepped up and made a generous donation for the drop boxes.”
Huisenga said every day two-thousand teens use prescription drugs to get high and 65-percent of those abuse prescription drugs took them from friends or family.
Clinton County Sheriff Rick Lincoln noted that over the last five years the effort has resulted in over a ton of prescriptions medications collected during the special events. He says “by having the drop box instead of having one day where people had to schedule the their time they have the opportunity to come during business hours to the locations and disposing of them.”
Iowa-American Water Company Operations Superintendent in Clinton, Dave Hansen said the company appreciates the work of the law enforcement agencies in keeping the communities and area ‘safe’ and this is a way to help the communities be safe. Hansen says the effort helps protect the valuable children and waterways for the future.
Huisenga says residents can drop off medication in their containers during business hours at the four locations and that their personal information will also be disposed of properly.
