Bids will be sought on a new middle school facility for the Clinton School District. The board voted to move ahead with the process and planners believe they can meet the $20-million budget, although the estimated cost is slightly above the price tag.
At the meeting on Monday the board discussed the project with architect Andrew Reich of the FRK and construction manager Randy Fuller of Estes Construction to review the plan.
The new facility is to be located on property at the corner of 13th Avenue North and 16th Street Northwest.
Construction Manager Randy Fuller said the estimated cost is $20-million and 800-thousand dollars which they know is slight above the district’s maximum price tag of $20 million. But he's confident the project can be bid under the district's budget.
Fuller said most of the additional costs are for soil work that was determined to be needed after further testing at the site.
There are also some ‘alternates’ that will be included as potential changes that can affect the price. One of those alternates is the addition of four classrooms to make more space to add more room for sixth grade to be included in the new building. The initial plan was to house 7th and 8th grade in the building and make the Lyons Middle School a 6th grade center-but at an earlier meeting the board decided to add sixth grade to the building and the number of students could fit without the addition rooms, but they would be helpful if it could be afforded.
The timeline would have the board award bids at the January 2013 meeting and start construction in March with completion in July 2014.
