...MAJOR WINTER STORM TO IMPACT THE AREA TONIGHT AND THURSDAY...

.AN INTENSE WINTER STORM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION TONIGHT AND THURSDAY...BRINGING HEAVY SNOW...HIGH WINDS AND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS. SNOWFALL TOTALS OF 10 TO 15 INCHES ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF EAST CENTRAL IOWA INTO NORTHWEST ILLINOIS WITH LESSER AMOUNTS TO THE SOUTHEAST. VERY STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS WILL BE GUSTING TO AT LEAST 50 TO 55 MPH. THIS WILL RESULT IN LIFE THREATENING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS FOR ANYONE THAT BECOMES STRANDED OR OTHERWISE NOT PREPARED.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN QUAD CITIES HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TO 6 PM CST THURSDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* TIMING...RAIN WILL MIX WITH SNOW...THAN CHANGE OVER TO ALL SNOW BY EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MOST OF THE DAY ON THURSDAY.

* SNOWFALL...SNOWFALL TOTALS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES OR MORE ESPECIALLY NORTH OF INTERSTATE 80.

* WIND...NORTH WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 20 TO 30 MPH TONIGHT WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH POSSIBLE. THURSDAY...NORTHWEST WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS AS HIGH AS 55 MPH.

* VISIBILITY...THE COMBINATION OF SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO ZERO AT TIMES...ESPECIALLY IN OPEN AREAS.

* TEMPERATURE/WIND CHILL...TEMPERATURES WILL BE FALLING INTO THE 20S WITH WIND CHILLS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS.

* IMPACTS...TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE RAPIDLY ONCE RAIN CHANGES TO SNOW EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. DUE TO INITIAL WARM PAVEMENT TEMPERATURES...ROADWAYS MAY BECOME ICY. IN ADDITION...HIGH WINDS AND ACCUMULATING SNOW MAY LEAD TO NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS DURING THE DAY THURSDAY. TRAVEL CONDITIONS THURSDAY MAY BECOME DANGEROUS...ESPECIALLY IN RURAL AREAS.

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS 6 TO 7 INCHES OR MORE OF SNOW FALLING AT INTENSE RATES OF 1-2 INCHES PER HOUR...IS EXPECTED. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY DANGEROUS OR IMPOSSIBLE...SO ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY AND TAKE YOUR WINTER SURVIVAL KIT.
