There apparently have been discussions at the federal level about closing the Clinton Social Security Office and the Clinton City Council is sending a communication to area Congressman and Senators urging them to help keep the office open. The Clinton office would be consolidated with the Davenport office.
Clinton Mayor Mark Vulich-at the council meeting on Tuesday-said the city learned about the potential closure in late June. He says Congressman Dave Loebsack’s office was already aware of the situation and had written a letter in support of the Clinton office to the Social Security Administration.
The mayor said the savings is estimated at 600-thousand dollars over five years.
Vulich said this is the third time the Clinton Social Security Office has been targeted for closing. He says in 2004 and 2008 and again this year the the council has adopted resolutions of support for keeping the office open.
Vulich said the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Information, Referral and Assistance Service have also been notified to have them alert their constituents about the potential closing.
Council member Julie Allasee said the input the citizens can be a key to helping to keep the office open.
The resolution of support was approved at the council meeting and a letter signed by all council members and the mayor will be sent to Congressman Loebsack and Bruce Braley plus Iowa Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley.
