The Clinton Fire Department is pointing to the success of the fire detector installation program for helping people escape an early morning fire.
Just before 6 o’clock the department was called to 609 5th Avenue South for a fire in an upstairs bedroom.
When they arrived they fire fighters found a sofa in a bedroom on fire and it was extinguished in a few minutes and the smoke cleared from the upstairs.
Everyone had evacuated the building by the time they arrived.
The occupant of the home said she was wakened by a smoke detector that she thought was a relative’s alarm clock. When she opened the bedroom door she noticed the smoke and called 9-1-1 and woke up the other residents to exit the home. No one was injured.
The fire department said this is an example that smoke detectors do save lives. The department report states that the smoke detectors in the home had been installed by the department in June of 2009 as part of the free Smoke Detector Program
The most probable cause of the fire is reported by the Clinton Fire Department as discarded smoke materials.
The Camamche Fire Department was called for a Rapid Intervention Team, but was called off while enroute.
