Some improvements and some areas that need more improvement were shown in the ‘annual yearly progress’ report for achievement of students in the Clinton School District.
The report comparing achievement with the federal No Child Left Behind law was outlined to the school board at their meeting last evening. Though the achievement tests changed which altered the comparison of scores, school officials say improvements were made in many areas.
Curriculum Director John Jorgenson said that the bottom line was that four schools-Bluff, Eagle Heights, Washington and Lyons Middle Schools were below the standards for reading and math and considered ‘schools in need of improvement.’ Last year the high school and Jefferson were on the list.
School Superintendent Deb Olson say district wide some area improved to be taken off the list and some were back on. She said district wide the achievement of student in math were off the list while reading was back on the list. The Superintendent said improved attendance and graduation rates were also removed from the list.
Superintendent Deb Olson in communications sent to parents said the District has submitted an improvement plan and has informed parents of other choices in those ‘Schools In Need of Assistance categories.
Those communications stated that aach SINA school that receives federal Title I funds must notify its parents of their school choice options. Parents (guardians) of students at Bluff and Eagle Heights may apply to transfer to Jefferson or Whittier. Parents (guardians) may apply for a transfer to Jefferson or Whittier by completing a school transfer application at the Administration Center. Requests for choice will be prioritized according to federal legislation which requires priority be given to the lowest achieving, low income students. Parents who wish for their child to remain at Bluff or Eagle Heights are not required to take any action.
In addition, schools in year-two of SINA designation, parents (guardians) whose children meet the eligibility requirements can request Supplemental Educational Services (SES). All students at Bluff and Eagle Heights are eligible. The district IS NOT required to provide transportation for these services. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent (guardian). The request for these services will be offered from August 20 - September 21, 2012 and December 3 - January 3, 2013 for the up-coming school year.
The board was also updated on the district’s school improvement committee and moves to a standards based report card.
