A study is planned on how to upgrade and improve the current Clinton main library building. Library Director Amy Birtell helped outline the study for the City Council at their recent meetings.
She has been on the job just over a year and said that in researching she found the first mention of a new library building in 1969 and periodically over the years. But, Birtell said one of the first she wanted to do is make a commitment to fix up the Carnegie library facility. She said that her first staff meeting just over a year ago she told the staff “we’re staying here, there is not plan on moving.” She compared the past talk about a new building was like preparing for trip and never getting to go.
Birtell says the staff has worked together to make improvements during the past year. She said the use of the library has been increasing over the past year.
The Library Director said they have received a $30,000 grant from the Community Development Association for a study on upgrading the facility has a team in place that includes architects, library experts and interior designers.
One of the study leaders-Ron Winter of the Gere-Dismer Architecture Firm of the Quad City says the study will look at all aspects of the building and services. Winter says the team would develop the comprehensive plan and include an opinion of cost and prioritization.
An additional of $21,000 would be needed to complete the study in addition to the 30-thousand dollar grant.
Finance Director Jessica Kinser said there were some options to find the additional funds. The council asked her to work with Birtell to find the funding to complete study.
