(Clinton) -- Bonus program to continue to help recruit police officers
An incentive to help find officers for the Clinton Police Department will continue. The bonus program was approved by the city council for another year.
If a city employee recruits a candidate hired by the Clinton Police Department the recruiter would receive a $500 bonus or a $1,000 bonus if the candidate has completed the law enforcement certification. A $10,000 bonus would also be paid to the certified officer over a four year period. Clinton Police Chief Brian Guy says that would still save money because the cost of sending an officer to the academy is over 33-thousand dollars and reduces local training time.
Guy says approving the program does not mean the department anticipates vacancies, but wants to be prepared. He says if the program is going to continue through 2013 they need to be able to advertise that as testing begins.
The bonus program has been in effect since 2005. Chief Guy says since it started that five department employees have received $500 each for successfully recruiting five candidates.
