Fire Call

(Clinton) -- Soy oil fire at Clinton County Bio-Energy Plan

It was an oil fire outside of any building at the Clinton County Bio-Energy Plant. The Clinton Fire Department was called to the plant at 5640 44th Avenue South at about 4 o’clock Wednesday for a possible fire on the ground floor.

The first crew on the scene reported heavy black smoke coming from behind the office building and flames visible on the ground. The fire was outside of all buildings. The soy oil fire was within the piping of the process area. It was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

The fire department reported that employees had been trying to put out the fire but were having problems due to the strong winds at the time. There were no injuries to any employees. Damage to the plant is estimated at 70-thousand dollars.

The Clinton Fire Department responded with 2 engine companies, a ladder truck, a tanker, the Command vehicle, and two ambulances with 13 personnel. The Battalion Chief requested mutual aid from the Camanche Fire Department, Fulton Fire Department and the Low Moor Fire Department. The Clinton Police Department and Clinton County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. The Battalion Chief said the mutual aid departments were called to assist with ‘water shuttle’ because there are no fire hydrants in the area of the plant. The plant is located in the rural area of the west edge of the city.
