Galen is an extraordinary flutist with an extensive performance career. He is also a riveting speaker on the topic of jazz history. Galen studied at Berklee College of Music and holds a Master’s Degree in Education and Performing Arts from Rutgers University, New Jersey.
This performance will provide an understanding and appreciation of this art form, its historical significance, and its role in the peaceful existence of mankind. Interestingly, Jazz is one of the fundamental elements found in most music types: from Afro-Cuban artists Mario Bauza and Cachao, to Jelly Roll Morton and Dizzy Gillespie, to classical music artist Igor Stravinsky’s Piano-Rag Music Prealudiu to country music’s Bob Wills with his mix of country and jazz. Jazz was an instrument of expression during some of the most difficult periods in American history and is also considered an important pathway to a greater appreciation of music in general.
Galen and his ensemble will be presenting ‘Notes at Noon’ from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the cafeteria. He will then be giving a lecture on Jazz from 1:25 – 2:25 p.m. in CCC Room 154. Both events are FREE and open to the college community and public.
