Event Description:
A Visit to Motel Sepia. Please join us on Tuesday, October 18th at 5:30 p.m. when Dale Kueter will visit the library to discuss his book, Motel Sepia. A black couple in the 1950s discovered, when on a business trip, that between Chicago and San Francisco, there were only six motels that would accept black travelers. So, on their return to Cedar Rapids, they opened a motel that would accept everyone.
In this fictionalized version of Motel Sepia, the clientele includes an unsavory couple dispatched by the Chicago mob. Clinton, and more specifically the predecessor of Smith Brothers General Store, plays a role in the story.
Dale Kueter wrote for Iowa newspapers for 41 years, including at the Clinton Herald during the 1960s. Kueter has published a children’s book, Hide the Daddy, and two full-length non-fiction books, Vietnam Sons and The Smell of the Soil. Motel Sepia is his first novel.
