(registration deadline Jan. 10) “Reflections on Dr. King’s Speech against the Vietnam War,” with Rev. John Dear

Sunday, January 16, 2022

Join Rev. John Dear to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday by studying his famous speech against the Vietnam War, given at Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967, one year to the day of his assassination. Many consider it his greatest speech, and one of the most important speeches in world history.

John suggests you get a copy of the speech, (see for example, “A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” edited by James Washington). Also, you can listen to a full audio recording of the one hour speech AND read the text at:  www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkatimetobreaksilence.htm

Last year, many of us read Dr. King’s “Letter from the Birmingham Jail.” This year, John suggests we read, listen to and study this text in anticipation of John’s presentation and discussion about Dr. King’s prophetic anti-war stand. Together we can ask: how does Dr. King’s warning about racism, poverty and militarism apply today? How can we pursue his extraordinary vision of universal love and nonviolence today? What can we learn from this great speech? How does it apply to our lives now? What words, phrases, teachings touch you the most from Dr. King’s great speech?

Please join us for an inspiring afternoon together reflecting on the Dr. King’s prophetic statement against war. Invite your friends, relatives, and church members as well. Together, with Dr. King’s guidance, let’s choose nonviolent co-existence!
