On Sunday, January 25, 2026, at approximately 4:35 p.m., Clinton County Deputies were notified that a blue Jeep Cherokee registered to Waylon James Koehler, age 46, of Clinton, was in the area of 11th Street and U.S. Highway 61 in DeWitt. Koehler had an active Clinton County warrant for Assault Causing Bodily Injury.
A short time later, deputies located the vehicle in the 2600 block of 285th Avenue (Old Highway 61), just south of DeWitt. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, it failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued into Scott County, where the suspect vehicle lost control near 20538 310th Street.
The driver, identified as Koehler, remained inside the vehicle and began harming himself with a knife. The Bettendorf Police Department responded with an armored vehicle, and deputies and officers negotiated with Koehler for a short time. Koehler subsequently exited the vehicle and surrendered peacefully. Koehler was treated at the scene for minor injuries by Medic Ambulance and the McCausland Fire Department. Koehler was then transported to the Clinton County Jail. Koehler is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury (warrant) and Eluding.
Clinton County Deputies were assisted by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Bettendorf Police Department, Medic Ambulance, and McCausland Fire Department.
NOTE: A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless
proven guilty in a court of law.
