Cool And Wet

May was below average for temperatures and above average for precipitation.

Clinton area official weather observer Jim Blaess reports the overall average temperature in May was 59 degrees.  That, he says is 3.5 degrees below the average.  Blaess says the average high over the month was 67 degrees and that was the coldest average high since 1945 when it was 66.6.

The lowest temperature during the month was 29 degrees on the 9th.  Blaess says that tied the record low for the date set in 1966.

The high on May 24th was 84 which made it the third latest time to reach 80 degrees in Clinton weather records. The latest was June 1st of 1973.  The highest temperature was on May 26th with 85 degrees.

Precipitation for the month was 6.15 inches.  Blaess says that’s 2.1 inches above the normal of 3.94 inches.

Over the first five months, Blaess has recorded 13.89 inches of precipitation.  That is 1.58 inches above normal for the period.

The meteorological spring ins considered March thru May and Blaess says during the three month period the average high was four-tenths of degree above the normal.  He says the precipitation was 4.14 inches compared to the normal of 3.08 inches.  That total included 7.1 inches of snow which is 4.8 inches above normal.  There was 3.3 inches of snow in March and 3.8 inches in April.

For June, Blaess says the average high on the 1st is 78 and average low is 58.  Those averages rise to 85 and 64 by the end of the month.  The weather observer says there an average of 4 days with 90 or above temperatures.  There is an average of 4.6 inches of precipitation.
