Sex Offender Registry Compliance Check Underway In Clinton County

Area Law Enforcement Agencies are conducting a compliance check of the registration of Sex Offenders thru-out Clinton County.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office is organizing the effort in conjunction with the Clinton, Camanche and Dewitt Police Departments plus the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations, 7th Judicial District Department of Corrections and Clinton County Attorney’s Office.  Clinton County Sheriff Bill Greenwalt invited the media to a briefing to start the compliance check.

Clinton County Sherriff’s Department Sergeant Steve Cundiff oversees the Sex Offender Registry and says some of the compliance issues they see are a failure to report all the people living in the residence where a sex offender lives, failing to report a move within the specified period, failure to register a car and similar compliance issues.

Cundiff says they have done the compliance checks at other times of the year but typically do focus on the Halloween period because the activities involved more kids out on the streets.

There are 79 sex offenders registered in Clinton County.  Clinton Police Department Captain Jon Davis says 52 of those offenders live in the city.  Davis says they work with the Sheriff’s to make sure the public is safe.

Kim Voda of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office has worked with the Sex Offender Registry for ten years.

Voda says the registry requires certain information.

While there is a public sex offender registry Voda says not all information is available and not all offenders are listed based on their status.  She says a citizen can find out more information by filing a request with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office
