A White Christmas Locally Less Likely

As Christmas Day approaches – a look at the Clinton weather records show 2019 had the highest temperature for the 25 of December when it was 62 according the records from weather observer Jim Blaess.  The coldest Christmas Day was 2000 with 19 below zero in the local weather records to the late 1870’s.

Blaess says the Christmas Day with the most precipitation was 1979 with a little over one inch and the year with the most snow on the day was 1920 with 3.3 inches.

He says the least snow over the November-December period was 1894 when there was no snow over the two months.

The local weather observer says a ‘white Christmas’ is considered to be one inch of snow on the ground.  Blaess says that’s been tracked since 1920 and since then Clinton has had 45 white Christmases and 57 without that one inch of snow on the ground.  The past four years are on the list without a white Christmas. He did point out that last year there was 9 inches of snow in a few days after Christmas, but not on Christmas Day.  Blaess says one of the longest stretches without a white Christmas in Clinton was 1952 to 1959.
