Pay Raises For Clinton County Elected Officials Approved

Clinton County elected official will get a pay raise in the next budget year.

At their meeting this week the Clinton County Board approved the general recommendations of the Compensation Board with the amendment of lowering the recommended increase for the Supervisors position.

The panel recommended a 12 percent increase for the County Sheriff’s position and six percent for the other elected officials.

County Board member Jim Irwin first suggested the increases be reduced by half to six percent for the sheriff and 3 percent for other elected officials.

County Board member Tom Determann reluctantly could agree to lower the Supervisor increase to 3 percent and follow the recommendations for the other elected officials.

The Compensation Board has members appointed by each elected officials and that panel recommends pay increases for those officials each year.

County Board member Dan Srp complimented the work of the Compensation Board in developing a proposal that considered all sides. Srp supported the proposal to lower the Supervisors increase and the full recommendation for other elected officials.

In the end-the County Board approved the proposal to lower the Supervisors pay increase to 3 percent with 12 percent for the Sheriff and 6 percent for the Auditor, County Attorney, Recorder, and Treasurer.

Although suggesting lower increases-Irwin did join Determann and Srp in approving the increases and said the action should be unanimous.  He also pointed out there was only a primary for the Supervisors and no contested races for other positions and that may indicate the pay is not enough.

With the approved increases the Auditor’s pay would be $87.072.23; County Attorney $143,614.41; Recorder $83.960.09; Sheriff $126,878.38; Treasurer $86,552.45 and Supervisors about $43,463 and Supervisor Chair about $44,699.82
