Deer, two-vehicle accident

On November 17, 2023, at approximately 5:25 p.m. Clinton County Deputies were dispatched to the 1600 block of Highway 61, Welton for a report of a two-vehicle accident. A preliminary investigation indicates one of the vehicles involved was traveling southbound and struck a deer. The vehicle was stopped as a result of the deer accident and the driver had exited the vehicle. A second vehicle, also traveling southbound, then struck the first vehicle causing the death of the driver from the vehicle involved in the deer accident.

Highway 61 southbound was shut down for approximately four hours in order for law enforcement to conduct an investigation.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld, pending proper notification of family.

The accident remains under investigation by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, the Welton Fire Department, the Iowa Department of Transportation, Genesis (De Witt) Ambulance, and the Clinton County Medical Examiners Office.
