Cooler Than Normal May

May ended below normal for the overall temperature.  Clinton Area Weather Observer Jim Blaess says the overall temperature was 61.4 degrees and that’s below the normal of 62.5.

The highest temperature was 86 on May 1st.  Blaess added the lowest temperature was 36 on the 8th.  The Weather Observer said 20 days of the month had below normal temperatures and 8 days had highs in the 80’s.

Blaess says precipitation for the month was 4.29 inches.  He says that compares to the normal of 3.94 inches.

For the first five months of the year, Blaess says precipitation was 11.77 inches which is below the normal for the year-to-date of 12.31.

For the March-April-May meteorological spring, Blaess says the overall temperature for the period was 1.6 degrees warmer than normal.  In that period, Blaess said March 2021 was the 11th warmest March in records to 1879.  Precipitation during the three months was about normal.  Blaess adds there was 3.6 inches of snow that all was recorded in March.  The normal snow in the meteorological spring is 2 inches according to Blaess.  The weather observer also mentioned that during the meteorological spring the Clinton area only heard thunder twice- April 7 and May 26th and that was unusual.  Other areas in the region may have had more thunder he said.

Blaess says in June there is an average 4.6 inches of precipitation and on average it is the wettest month of the year.  There are four days with temperatures of 90 or above.  Blaess says the average high on June 1st is 78 and the average low is 56.  He says those rise to 85 and 64 by the end of June.
