City of Clinton Awarded Over $1 Million in EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant

The City of Clinton is proud to announce it has been selected to receive $1,091,917 in Brownfields Cleanup Grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7. This award is part of nearly $5.5 million in Brownfields grants allocated to communities across Iowa, and $267 million nationwide, under the leadership of EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.

Grant funds will be used to clean up the former Clinton YMCA property located at 480 South 3rd Street. The now-vacant, 0.96-acre site operated as a YMCA until 2021 and is contaminated with inorganic materials. The funding will support the removal of the pool section of the building—an essential final step in preparing the site for redevelopment. Additionally, the grant will help finalize a Community Involvement Plan and support public engagement activities to ensure transparency and community input throughout the cleanup process.

“The EPA Brownfields Grant is a tremendous opportunity for Clinton,” said Mayor Scott Maddasion. “Restoring the historic 1905 YMCA building is not just about preserving our past, it’s about shaping our future. This project is a key part of our continued efforts to revitalize and transform our downtown into a vibrant, welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike. Without this federal investment, the redevelopment would not be possible.”

“The removal of the pool section of the former YMCA building is the final and essential step to prepare this site for redevelopment,” said City Administrator Matt Brooke. “This progress would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of Clinton’s Community Development Director Tammy Johnson, working in close partnership with Dawn Danielson of ECIA. Thanks to the $1.09 million in EPA Brownfields Grant funding, we now have the resources to bring back the historic 1905 YMCA building and continue transforming our downtown. Clinton remains committed to building a cleaner, greener, and more livable community for all.”

The City of Clinton is grateful for the continued partnership with EPA Region 7, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and the East Central Intergovernmental Association (ECIA), whose support has been instrumental in securing and implementing these transformative investments.
