The City of Clinton Engineering Department has completed a comprehensive engineering study to evaluate the necessity of traffic signals at the following intersections:
South 2nd Street & 3rd Avenue South
South 2nd Street & 4th Avenue South
South 2nd Street & 7th Avenue South
Based on the findings, the traffic signals at these intersections are no longer warranted under current traffic conditions and federal guidelines outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). As a result, the City Engineering Department has recommended the removal of these signals and the implementation of appropriate stop control measures. Based on prior experience with signals removed, delay to vehicles on all approaches is expected to decrease as signals are removed.
New Traffic Control Measures
Upon removal of the signals, the following traffic controls will be installed:
South 2nd Street & 3rd Avenue South: Two-Way Stop on 3rd Avenue South
South 2nd Street & 4th Avenue South: Two-Way Stop on 4th Avenue South
South 2nd Street & 7th Avenue South: Four-Way Stop (All-Way Stop)
Implementation Timeline
The traffic signals at all three intersections will be removed on December 18, 2025. In preparation for this change:
Permanent stop signage will be installed in advance of the removal date.
These signals have been switched to “all way flashing red” to help drivers adjust to the upcoming changes.
Public notification will be provided to ensure awareness and safe transition.
This action has been approved by the Clinton City Council, and the Engineering Department will oversee the removal and installation process.
