Unresponsive Inmate Investigation (Update)

On December 28, 2025, at approximately 12:25 P.M., a Correctional Officer at the Clinton County Jail was conducting routine cell checks when the Correctional Officer discovered an unresponsive male inmate in a cell. Upon locating the unresponsive male, Correctional Officers began administering lifesaving measures to the male subject until the Clinton Fire Department arrived on-scene and continued with the lifesaving measures. The male subject was transported to Mercy One Genesis by the Clinton Fire Department and later transferred to the University of lowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City, Iowa.

Upon preliminary investigation, the male inmate was determined to be the sole occupant in his cell and was found by the Correctional Officer in manner consistent with an attempted suicide. On December 30, 2025, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office received notification the male inmate had been pronounced deceased at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The identity of the individual is not being released at this time, pending proper notification of family.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and being conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s, Division of Criminal Investigation, with full cooperation from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.
