Air Conditioning Unit – Overheated Belt – Hy-Vee 901 South 4th Street

The Clinton Fire Department (CFD) was dispatched to Hy Vee for a reported structure fire involving a rooftop HVAC unit. Initial reports indicated the HVAC unit itself was on fire. At the time of the call, all but one CFD unit were already committed to other emergency responses or training. Upon arrival, crews were directed to the roof to investigate the HVAC unit. There was no evacuation upon arrival.

CFD assigned four personnel to the roof to assess the unit and two personnel inside to secure utilities. The investigation determined that the HVAC unit experienced a belt malfunction, which generated a significant amount of smoke within the unit and some light smoke inside the store. No active fire was found. Power to the affected HVAC unit was isolated, and the scene was turned over to store management. CFD responded with: Three ambulances, two engines, one ladder truck and one command vehicle.

A total of 13 personnel operated on scene.
