On May 06, 2026, at approximately 01:49 PM., officers from the Clinton Police Department responded to a report of a shots fired call in the 200 block of Main Ave. in Clinton, Iowa. The preliminary investigation indicated that a male identified as Larry Stauffer III was responsible for shooting a red BMW that was parked in a parking lot. Stauffer was gone and could not be located. A warrant for Reckless use of a firearm (Aggravated Misdemeanor) and Possession of a firearm by a domestic assault offender (D Felony) were issued.
On May 8, 2026, at approximately 1240 P.M. officers from the Clinton Police Department responded to the area of 2nd Ave S. and S. Bluff Blvd in reference to a shooting. Officers located several shell casings and a vehicle that had been shot. During the investigation the suspect was identified as Larry Stauffer III. Stauffer was also located and taken into custody. Stauffer is being charged with his warrant from the May 6th incident as well as Intimidation with a dangerous weapon (C Felony).
Based on the evidence obtained, authorities do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
Criminal charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
